Choosing a Teak Wood Cot: Sizes, Storage and Headboard Styles
How to choose a solid teak cot in Bengaluru: single, double, queen and king sizes, storage options, headboard styles and poster beds.
A good teak cot should stay silent and solid for twenty years or more. Here’s what to decide before you order one.
Sizes
Common Indian mattress sizes are:
- Single: 3 × 6.5 ft (36 × 78 in)
- Double: 4.5 × 6.5 ft (54 × 78 in)
- Queen: 5 × 6.5 ft (60 × 78 in)
- King: 6 × 6.5 ft (72 × 78 in)
Leave at least 2 feet of walking space on each side you’ll get in from. Because every cot is made to order, we can make it to a custom size, such as a slightly shorter king that fits wall to wall.
Storage
- Hydraulic lift-up: the whole base lifts up for large storage, good for bedding and suitcases.
- Drawers: easier for daily use, but need clear floor space to open.
- No storage: lighter and airier, and easier to clean under.
The Cut-Out Storage Cot and Bookshelf Headboard Cot are popular in apartments.
Headboard styles
- Panelled or slatted: clean and modern.
- Jaali: cut-work panels with a traditional touch. See the Jaali Panel Cot.
- Carved: a classic statement for larger bedrooms.
- Upholstered: soft for sitting up to read. See the Royal Tufted Cot.
Poster and canopy beds
For high ceilings, a four-poster bed such as the Kerala Spindle Canopy Bed makes the room. Most suit a standard 10 ft ceiling; we can shorten the posts for lower ones.
What to check in any cot
- A central support rail and legs for queen and king sizes.
- Bolted joints, so it can be taken apart for moving.
- Smooth, finished edges where you’ll brush past.
