How to Care for Teak Furniture in Bengaluru’s Climate
Simple care for solid teak furniture through Bengaluru’s monsoon and dry months: cleaning, polishing, spills, sunlight and balcony furniture.
Solid teak is one of the easiest woods to look after. A little regular care keeps it looking good for decades through Bengaluru’s mix of monsoon humidity and dry winters.
Everyday cleaning
- Dust with a soft, dry cotton cloth.
- For marks, use a cloth slightly damp with plain water, then wipe dry straight away.
- Avoid harsh chemical sprays, ammonia and silicone polishes, which can cloud the finish.
Spills and heat
Blot spills quickly instead of rubbing. Use coasters under glasses and mats under hot dishes, since heat and water rings can mark polished surfaces.
Monsoon
Teak’s natural oils help it resist moisture, but keep furniture a few inches away from walls that get damp, so air can circulate. Open almirahs and drawers now and then on dry days.
Dry months and sunlight
Direct sun through a window will gradually lighten any wood finish. Rotate pieces occasionally, or use curtains during the brightest hours.
Balcony furniture
Teak rocking chairs and swings do well on covered balconies. Keep cushions indoors during heavy rain, and wipe the wood with a light teak oil once or twice a year.
Repolishing
After many years, a light sanding and repolish brings back the original look. This is one of the big advantages of solid wood over laminate.
